Het vervangende schoolgebouwtje is bijna klaar, de opvang begint weer over twee weken!

Het volgende artikel zal de toekomst van het project in meer detail bespreken, nu de externe bijdragen van DWKK afgebouwd gaan worden in 2026!

 

The replacement building is almost ready for use, the Centre will receive the children in two weeks.

The next article will discuss the future of the project in more detail, now that the financial inputs from DWKK will be finalizing in 2026!

Schoolgebouwtje, termieten en waterschade...Sponsorhulp welkom!

Termieten en waterschade hebben helaas het schoolgebouw zodanig verzwakt dat een substantiële onderhoudsbeurt onvermijdelijk is. Hierbeneden is een samenvatting van een aantal mails van de Shinners vrouwengroep over de alternatieven die besproken zijn. Waar het op neerkomt is dat het ongeveer 650.000 Ksh (ongeveer 4.300 euro) gaat kosten om een tijdelijk opvang gebouwtje neer te zetten, waar de kinderen opgevangen kunnen worden terwijl het originele bebouw of verstevigd of vervangen kan worden.

The kids at the centre are doing well.

As I reported about the structure, we tried to reinforce it but unfortunately it may not hold for long. All the timber has been destroyed. We are trying to find help to temporarily make a small structure that the kids can use.  The timber of the school buiding is so badly damaged that the structure will probably have to be brought down in the long run. We am afraid reinforcing will prove to be more costly than rebuilding it from scratch. A contractor has made a cost estimate cost for a temporary structure, which amounts to 650,000/ .  

In future, the structure may have to be erected using steel and not wood..

Both our students are doing very well. Their graduations are scheduled for December this year, hoping that they pass their final exams....!! 

In general, despite the ongoing demonstrations that are paralyzing most activities in the country, Kisumu has been relatively calm. Many lives lost in Nairobi and businesses destroyed.  We can only hope that the general political situation will improve....

Hieronder wat recente foto's van het opvangcentrum. De kinderen krijgen leesles en doen allerlei leerzame spelletjes met hun teacher Zena. Maaltijden worden verzorgd door Ruth.
 
Ook de voortgang van de twee gesponsorde studenten gaat naar wens.
 
Helaas blijft de kippenverkoop matig door de voortdurende econonomische problemen in Kisumu, waardoor restaurants en hotels minder klanten hebben en dus bestellen. 
 
 
Het bericht hieronder is van Cornila Obare, onze coördinator in Kenia.
 
Below are photos of the kids at the centre. They are 35 in number.  Part of the partition in the classroom had to be removed, termites had destroyed the wood. We did a bit of reinforcement of the wall as the wood is now getting infested by termites.
 
It has generally been dry and dusty but we are expecting rains this week.

De voortgang van de studie van de twee studenten door ons gesponsord

Onze Stichting betaalt nu voor het tweede jaar de studiekosten van twee veelbelovende studenten (Peter en Rogers) uit de sloppenwijk bij Kisumu. Onze Keniaanse counterparts, de vrouwengroep de Shinners heeft deze studenten voorgedragen. Hun families hebben geen middelen om het schoolgeld te betalen en hun diplomas zullen er enorm aan bijdragen dat de families waar zij thuis horen een betere toekomst tegemoet gaan.
 
Hieronder mails van Peter Odhiambo en Cornila Obare, onze Keniaanse coordinatrice over de voortgang van hun studies en het opvangcentrum voor weeskinderen in Kibos.
 
Dear Jan,
I hope you are doing well. I have come to the end of the third year study. I am now proceeding on teaching practice for the next three months. We were actually supposed to report on 26th of last month, but the teachers have been on strike. luckily enough they have reached an agreement with the government and I will report tomorrow. I am going to Ahero Girls High School. It is about 20 kilometers from Kisumu.
I am looking forward to this new experience.

Dear Jan, 
I met Rogers today. He is doing well and happy so far about his course. 
He says that the units for the first term dealt fot the most part on human anatomy and physiology. This was a bit unexpected as  he expected to start with instrumentation straight away.
All in all he enjoyed the lessons and is looking forward to the next term. 
He is happy because  the course allows him to work both in theatre and the sterilizing unit at the hospital.  He reports back to college on 4th September. 
Preoperative Theatre Technologists are mostly concerned with instruments used for surgery. They are tasked with ensuring that the surgeon receives the right instruments for surgery.  They can also work in the sterilisation department; where instruments are sterilised.
The centre is moving on, thanks to Rahim. He is still able to support the teacher . By the time they were closing for the long holidays (November yo January), there were 38 kids going to the centre.  Seven of them did interviews and will be joining primary school in January. 
The children have also reported back at the centre on 4th of september. Thirty of them already reported back and we expect that the rest will come in this week.
